Service Information - Jefferson County, Alabama

GARBAGE COLLECTION

*Garbage collection occurs one time per week.

*Households may not share carts/services. Each household must have its own billing account. *

*Carts should be curbside for collection by 5:30 AM. Routes may begin as early as 6 AM. For a variety of reasons, Amwaste trucks will have varying collection times and may not service each home at the same time every week.

*Do not place carts on storm drain covers, storm gutters, steep slopes, or elevated platforms. Do not place carts under low-hanging utility lines, overhead obstructions, or 6’ of a fixed object.

* Carts should be placed on the curb with the lid opening pointing toward the street, no more than 3’ from the curb, and at least 4’ from any fixed object or parked vehicles.

* All waste must be bagged, and each bag should be no heavier than 30 lbs.

* Holiday Schedule: Should an observed holiday fall on a weekday, collection for that week will be delayed by one day. If the collection day is before the holiday, the service will not be affected. For example: (1) Christmas falls on a Monday. The pickup schedule for everyone will be pushed back by one day. Monday to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday, etc. (2) Christmas falls on a Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday routes will run as normal. Wednesday-Friday routes will be delayed by one day. o Observed Holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

GARBAGE COLLECTION

• Garbage collection is once per week.
• All garbage must be bagged or containerized.  There is a seven-bag limit per home.  Participation is mandatory by State Law and County Ordinance.
• Bags or cans must be sturdy enough to prevent spillage or breaking.  Bags should not exceed 35 pounds.
• Bags or cans should be on the curb, or the designated collection area, by 7am on collection day to ensure service.  For a variety of reasons, Amwaste route trucks will have varying collection times and may not service each home at the same time every week.
• Social Security Exemptions are available.  Registration is annually beginning in October and ending mid-December every year.  All exemptions are approved on an annual basis and must be applied for annually and all conditions met.

• Each home is provided a 95- or 96-gallon rollout cart.  All garbage must be contained in the cart. Additional carts can be requested, additional rates apply. Additional carts cannot be used for another residential address other than the home designated, no sharing of carts.
• Carts should be on the curb, or the designated collection area, by 7am on collection day to ensure service.  For a variety of reasons, Amwaste route trucks will have varying collection times and may not service each home at the same time every week.

Yard Waste Collection

• Yard waste collection is provided on the garbage collection day.
• Each home has a one cubic yard limit per week.
• Limbs and brush should be set out beside the garbage cart.
• Small items such as leaves and grass must be bagged.
• Limbs cannot exceed 5 inches in diameter or 4 feet in length, and must be bundled.
• 1 cubic yd (3ftx3ftx3ft) of green waste (limbs, grass, clippings) allowed per week
• Limbs cannot exceed 5” in diameter and 4’ in length
• Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged.
